Designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, 19th-century Victorian overmantel mirrors typically feature heavy moulded architectural cornices, classical pilasters, and gilded or silvered wood frames crafted to complement period chimney pieces.

These frames were constructed from carved pine or lime wood coated with gesso, over which genuine silver leaf or silvered alloy was applied and sealed, combined with silvered glass plates.
