Originating in France during the late 18th century, the cheval mirror is a freestanding, full-length looking glass suspended within a frame that pivots on vertical pins or screws. The term cheval derives from the French word for horse, referencing the four-legged trestle base typical of early designs.

Traditional pieces were constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, often enhanced with fine stringing or inlay. Frames were meticulously joined using mortise and tenon techniques, while the original glass plates were silvered using traditional mercury or chemical processes and held securely with wooden backboards.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the construction joinery, the type of timber used, and the characteristics of the glass plate. Genuine period mirrors often exhibit subtle foxing, slight distortions in the glass, hand-cut screws or fixings, and natural patina consistent with age on the wooden surfaces.

A freestanding floor mirror works effectively in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to enhance natural light and create a sense of expanded space. Its classic timber frame complements both traditional period rooms and transitional spaces by adding warmth and historical texture.

Preserve the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying high-quality beeswax to nourish the wood. Avoid using harsh chemical sprays or abrasive cleaners on both the wood and the mirror glass, and maintain a stable indoor humidity to prevent warping.
