It was listed by Opus Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This is an early 1800s Georgian whitewood misers snuff box with painted flowers. It  also has an extremely rare Bilston enamel label saying "A prefent from Worthing'. Note the spelling of present using an f instead of an s. This dates this box to the early 1800s. After 1824  s was used.

This is a very unusual feature to find on a Tunbridge Ware item, normally the labels were paper, it must have been commisioned especially.

The lid swivels around to allow just a pinch of snuff, limiting the amount someone could take, hence why this type of snuff box is called a Misers Snuff Box.

It measures 7cm w x 2.5cm h.

Date of Manufacture

Opus Antiques has dated this Georgian Misers Snuff Box to the Georgian era.

A misers snuff box is a small pocket container featuring a clever sliding or rotating lid mechanism designed to dispense a tiny amount of snuff at a time, traditionally associated with stingy or frugal habits.

Georgian snuff boxes were crafted from a wide variety of materials including native and exotic hardwoods (treen), papier-mache, horn, tortoiseshell, silver, and gold, frequently adorned with enamel plaques or miniature paintings.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned wooden construction, period-appropriate wear, genuine hand-painted or enamelled decoration, and traditional joinery techniques such as micro-pinning or fine dovetailing characteristic of 18th-century craftsmanship.

Small antique collectables are ideal for display on a stack of art books on a coffee table, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed on a mantlepiece to add historical texture and curated character to a room.

Antique wooden items should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations. Maintenance involves occasional gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth and avoidance of modern chemical polishes.
