This pair of Regency period wall mirrors is from 1820. Each circular convex glass plate is set within a gold giltwood frame ornamented with inset ball moulding and an ebonised reeded slip. Above each frame sits a black ebonised eagle perched on a rocky outcrop, flanked by scrolling leaf carvings. The sides incorporate scrolling acanthus foliage, and the lower sections feature further leaf carving alongside an ebonised lion mask. Each mirror measures 130 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, and weighs as a substantial wall-mounted piece. These mirrors suit placement in a formal reception room or above a sideboard in a dining room.

Convex mirrors became fashionable in Britain during the Regency period in the early nineteenth century, prized for their ability to reflect entire rooms and enhance natural light.

Frames were typically crafted from carved wood and composition plaster finished with gold leaf, incorporating an ebonised inner slip and a curved glass plate.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved timber elements, natural wear or oxidisation to the gilded surface, an ebonised reeded slip, and minor distortion in the curved glass.

Position them symmetrically above a sideboard, flanking a fireplace, or along a grand hallway to introduce structural depth and reflective interest.

Dust the frame gently with a dry soft brush and clean the glass carefully with a damp cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive materials on the water-gilded surface.
