Originating from the Georgian period, this pocket-sized container takes the delightful form of a gentleman's shoe, designed for holding and dispensing tobacco snuff. The piece is formed from dark brown mahogany timber, polished to a deep patina, and embellished extensively with inlaid brass pin work and pique dot motifs arranged in geometric crosses and floral patterns across the upper surface and heel. A sliding lid fits flush into the top of the ankle section, opening to reveal the interior compartment while retaining the continuous decorative scheme of metal studs along its perimeter. A gently curved arch leads down to a pointed toe at the front, supported by a distinct elevated block heel at the rear. Measuring 8.5 cm wide by 3 cm deep, this diminutive accessory fits neatly into the palm of the hand or rests unobtrusively on a gentleman's study desk or display surface. Placed in a modern home, it serves as a conversational cabinet of curiosities piece on a mantelpiece shelf, a desk tidy for small trinkets, or a decorative accent within a traditional library or home office setting.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, carved wooden novelties known as treen were popular for holding powdered tobacco, or snuff. Shoe-shaped boxes were frequently crafted as love tokens, gifts, or decorative personal accessories during the Georgian era.

These items were predominantly carved from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or fruitwood. Ornamental designs were often executed using pique work, where tiny brass or silver pins were hammered into the wood surface in decorative patterns.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-carved construction, period brass pin decoration, and smooth sliding or hinged lids. Age-appropriate wear, natural oxidisation of the timber, and hand-cut joinery distinguish genuine period pieces from later reproductions.

Display small treen objects inside a glass curio cabinet, on a stack of art books, or atop a gentlemans desk. Combining rich dark mahogany with modern minimal backgrounds accentuates the intricate metal pin work.

Keep the object away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent the timber from warping or splitting. Clean gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dust from around the brass pins, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the wood.
