Nineteenth-century French mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden frames coated in gesso and gold leaf, often incorporating classical motifs, scrolling foliage, and symmetrical crests designed to reflect light and enhance spatial proportions.

These mirrors were traditionally crafted from softwoods such as pine or oak for the structural frame, overlaid with layers of gesso (a plaster-like binder) which was intricately carved, and finished with water gilding or oil gilding using thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the reverse side for hand-adzed timber, old hand-cut screws or handmade nails, the depth and oxidation of the mercury or silvered glass backing, and fine crazing or micro-cracking within the aged gesso layers.

An antique gilt mirror functions as a striking focal point when propped casually against a wall above a modern console, or hung securely above a fireplace to introduce historical contrast, texture, and reflected light into a minimalist space.

Gilded frames require delicate maintenance; dust gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or microfiber cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, and direct moisture which can degrade the fragile historical gesso and gold leaf.
