Description

These two Carolean (Restoration) caned walnut side chairs have come from a private collection and will greatly enhance a period setting . The carved frames and early caning both retain an appealing depth of colour commensurate with their age - the Carolean period was the last of the three Jacobean styles, it was heavily influenced by the French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian, but was lighter in construction, with more elaborate carving than previous periods. They have been sensitively restored in the past and are stable with no major replacements. The benefit of using walnut, apart from its attractive appearance, was the ease at which it could be carved. However, combine 300 + years of use, both as a side chair and as a side dish for walnut loving woodworm (they left long ago), together with those lighter elegant walnut frames, and you have two stable, highly decorative, but not particularly usable early English chairs full of character and history.

The measurements below are for the larger chair - however, there is very little difference in size between the two.

Carolean furniture refers to the style produced during the reign of King Charles II from 1660 to 1685, characterised by lavish carving, scrolling motifs, and the frequent use of walnut.

These chairs typically utilised solid walnut or beech frameworks combined with woven cane inserts for both the backrest and seat panels.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved scrolling crest rails, turned legs, and appropriate patination and oxidisation of the wood over centuries.

Pairing historical seating with a minimalist or modern table creates a striking contrast, allowing the intricate craftsmanship and texture of the wood to serve as a focal point.

Maintain cane panels by occasionally wiping them with a damp cloth to keep the fibers supple, and avoid placing them near direct heat sources or in overly dry environments to prevent cracking.
