FAQs

French antique armchairs evolved through various stylistic periods, including Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Empire, reflecting the shifting tastes of French craftsmanship and interior design from the 18th century onwards.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames such as beech or walnut, traditionally joined with mortise and tenon techniques, and hand-sprung upholstery finished with high-quality textiles like silk velvet.

Authentication involves examining the joinery for hand-cut joints, inspecting the type of wood used in the frame, checking for traditional stuffing materials like horsehair, and assessing any maker marks or stamps.

An antique French armchair can serve as a statement accent piece in a contemporary living room or study, pairing contrasting textures like sleek metal or minimalist decor with its historic upholstery.

Preservation requires keeping the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, regularly vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, and consulting professional conservators for textile cleaning.
