This 19th-century French Revival credenza side cabinet is constructed from ebonised wood, red tortoiseshell, brass Boulle marquetry, and ormolu mounts, complemented by curved glass display doors and a shaped plinth base. The serpentine front showcases intricate gilt-bronze ormolu mounts, floral scroll marquetry in brass and red, and detailed brass mouldings around the central door and glazed compartments. Working locks and keys secure the doors, which are accented with visible keyhole escutcheons and figural ormolu mounts. Measuring 119.5 cm high, 183 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, this large piece serves as a grand storage and display cabinet in a principal living room or formal dining space. Interior shelving behind the curved glass doors provides visible display space for decorative items, while the enclosed central cupboard offers concealed storage. The rich black, gold, and red colour palette creates a striking visual impact suited to traditional interiors. The sturdy plinth base supports the weight of the elaborate structure, anchoring the cabinet firmly against a wall. Working locks and keys provide practical functionality alongside the decorative marquetry and mountwork.

Boulle marquetry is a decorative inlay technique pioneered in 17th-century France by Andre-Charles Boulle, involving cut patterns of brass and tortoiseshell. The technique experienced major revivals during the Victorian era and the French Napoleon III period in the 19th century.

These cabinets typically feature an ebonised timber frame inlaid with sheets of polished brass and natural tortoiseshell marquetry. Decorative gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and glazed glass panels are commonly integrated into the construction.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut brass inlays flush with the timber surface, heavy cast-bronze ormolu mounts fixed with original screws, and natural variations or minor age-related contraction in the tortoiseshell. Look for precise craftsmanship along cabinet edges and authentic wear on the gilding.

A Boulle credenza serves as a focal statement piece in formal dining rooms, grand entryways, or living rooms. Positioning it against a neutral or rich wall colour allows the contrast between gold brass, red tortoiseshell, and dark wood to stand out.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, radiators, or humidity fluctuations to prevent brass lift or tortoiseshell warping. Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers or liquid polishes.
