This Victorian Lancashire spindleback rocker displays a warm brown timber finish with honey-toned natural rush seating, sweeping curved wooden rocking feet, and elegantly turned front arm supports. Formed in an English Country rustic farmhouse style, the chair is constructed from ash, elm, and fruitwood, showcasing a tall multi-tiered spindle backrest, smooth rounded armrests, and sturdy stretcher bars connecting the lower legs. Measuring 97 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, this comfortable nursing chair fits easily beside a fireplace in a living room, within a traditional bedroom retreat, or as a characterful reading seat in a cosy study. The sturdy construction is completely ready for daily use in a modern home, providing reliable support with its woven rush seat and durable solid wood frame. Its compact proportions make it practical for smaller spaces while maintaining an authentic antique aesthetic that complements both period interiors and rustic contemporary schemes.

FAQs

A Lancashire spindleback rocking chair is a regional style of English vernacular furniture, characterised by multiple horizontal tiers of turned wooden spindles across the backrest and a hand-woven rush seat.

These chairs were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as ash, oak, or beech for the turned frame and spindles, combined with natural twisted rush for the woven seat.

Authentic period examples feature irregular hand-lathe turned spindles, hand-carved joinery with wooden pegs, subtle wear patterns on the front stretcher and rockers, and natural patination on the timber.

Place the chair beside a fireplace, reading nook, or window sill, pairing its structured dark wood frame with a woven wool throw or plain linen cushion to complement contemporary textures.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax polish annually to protect the finish, and keep the woven rush seat clean by gently vacuuming with a soft brush attachment.
