FAQs

French antique mirrors from the 19th century typically feature carved wooden frames, gesso detailing, and arched or trumeau designs influenced by traditional European craftsmanship.

These pieces are generally constructed using solid wood frames, applied gesso for intricate moulding details, and silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is often indicated by hand-carved details, ageing and foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass mirror plate, and traditional joinery methods on the reverse.

Leaning a large arched mirror against a living room or hallway wall adds architectural depth, reflects natural light, and creates a contrast with contemporary furnishings.

Dust the frame gently with a dry cloth and clean the mirror glass using a non-ammonia solution applied to a cloth rather than directly onto the glass to protect the aged silvering.
