FAQs

Italian gilt wood mirrors trace their origins back to the Renaissance and Baroque periods, where master craftsmen in regions like Venice and Florence perfected the art of applying thin gold leaf to intricately carved wooden frames.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from softwoods such as pine or lime, layered with gesso, and meticulously hand-gilded with gold leaf or silver leaf before being burnished to achieve a lustrous finish.

Authenticity is determined by examining the gesso layering, hand-carved tool marks on the reverse, the presence of foxing or oxidation on the mirror plate, and the type of joinery used in the wooden frame construction.

An ornate gilt mirror acts as a focal point when hung above a modern minimalist sideboard or fireplace mantel, creating a deliberate juxtaposition between historical craftsmanship and clean contemporary lines.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster. Avoid all liquid cleaners, commercial polishes, and direct sunlight to prevent the gold leaf from flaking or fading.
