This mid nineteenth century Swedish folk art painted box belongs to the Scandinavian country style, constructed from pine with original iron strapwork and pigment. The rectangular pine body displays a reddish brown ragwork finish offset by blue painted metal corner straps, framing a front panel with hand-painted lettering, a floral decorative panel, and the painted date 1806 with the final digit scrubbed out. The lid carries a hand-painted floral wreath design and an iron carrying handle, opening to reveal internal storage space and a candle box compartment alongside an original lock without a key. Surface marks, fading, and wear indicate age. Measuring 27.3 cm high, 58.4 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, this rustic farmhouse piece sits comfortably on a sideboard top or table surface to store letters, accessories, and small keepsakes in a living room or hallway.

FAQs

Swedish folk art boxes, historically associated with the Allmoge rural decorative tradition, were produced predominantly from the 18th to the mid-19th century. Local itinerant painters and carpenters crafted these pieces for farming communities, often adding dates, monograms, and floral motifs to celebrate weddings or personal milestones.

These boxes were primarily built from native softwoods such as pine or spruce, secured with hand-forged iron hinges, corner brackets, and handles. The surface decorations were applied using hand-mixed mineral pigments combined with oil or egg tempera binders.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut dovetail or nailed joinery, forged ironwork with irregular dimensions, and natural wear patterns on elevated paint surfaces. Original dated inscriptions and regional decorative shorthand, such as kurbits floral detailing, also indicate authenticity.

A painted folk art box works effectively as a focal decorative object on a sideboard, console table, or deep open shelving. Its historic colours and textured patina provide contrast against contemporary minimalist backdrops or rustic country interiors.

Preserve original historic paintwork by dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or brush. Avoid applying water, chemical detergents, or heavy wax polishes, and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the pine wood from warping or flaking.
