This nineteenth-century Victorian colonial writing slope is made from solid camphorwood with a reddish brown finish and ebony inlay. The rectangular carcass features brass-bound edges, a tambour roll-top section at the back, a sloping writing surface with a brass cartouche, and a pull-out drawer fitted with a recessed brass handle. When opened, the interior reveals inkwells, pen rests, and a baize-covered writing surface, accompanied by a brass label inscribed \u2018From Robert to Dear Emma\u2019. Measuring 22 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 37 cm deep when closed, this piece is suited for use on an office desk in a gentleman's library or study to store writing materials and provide a portable writing surface.

A Victorian writing slope is a portable wooden box featuring a slanted writing surface that unfolds, designed to store stationery, inkwells, and writing instruments for correspondence during travel or at home.

Traditional colonial writing slopes were commonly crafted from dense, aromatic woods such as camphor, teak, or mahogany, often reinforced with brass strapwork and flush handles to protect against damage during transit.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass fittings inset flush with the timber surface, natural metal oxidisation, and period-correct lock mechanisms.

Position the piece on a home office desk, console table, or library shelf, pairing it with contemporary books and ceramic accents to add historical texture.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
