FAQs

A William IV sarcophagus tea caddy is a lidded container crafted during the 1830s, featuring the architectural, inverted-pyramidal silhouette characteristic of the period, designed to store and preserve expensive loose-leaf tea.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods like Brazilian rosewood, often featuring finely figured veneers over a pine or mahogany carcass, complemented by brass or mother-of-pearl fittings and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, old secondary woods on the interior compartments, traditional hand-turned feet, and period-appropriate brass locks rather than modern screws or machine-cut components.

This box functions well as a decorative accent piece on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf, adding rich textural warmth and historical character to contemporary living spaces.

To preserve the rosewood and historical finish, keep the caddy away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, dust regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally apply microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
