A Georgian toilet mirror, also known as a dressing glass, is a small table-top mirror featuring an adjustable frame mounted on a box base containing small drawers. These pieces became popular during the 18th century for personal grooming and were typically placed on top of a chest of drawers or dressing table.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring fine veneers and cockbeaded drawer linings. The glass plates were historically hand-silvered and held within rebated frames, whilst the bases frequently utilised dovetailed joints and brass handle furniture.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the timber patination, hand-cut dovetails on the base drawers, original brasses or escutcheons, and the characteristics of the mirror glass itself, which often displays foxing, waviness, or bevelled edges indicative of historical manufacturing methods.

An antique mirror can be styled by placing it on a modern console table, chest of drawers, or dressing desk to create a textural contrast between old and new materials. Its reflective surface helps to bounce light around a room while adding historical character and architectural interest to the space.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and moisture fluctuations to protect the wood and veneer. The wooden frame should be cleaned with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally treated with appropriate wax, whilst the mirror glass requires gentle cleaning with a mild, non-ammonia solution applied to a cloth rather than directly to the glass to protect the historical silvering.
