This nineteenth-century Regency tea caddy is constructed from warm brown rosewood and decorated with brass inlay. The sarcophagus-shaped piece with a pagoda top has profuse foliate scrollwork cut brass on the lid, frieze, and front, complemented by small turned side knob handles and neat turned bun feet. An original working lock with a key sits on the front. Inside, the caddy holds original cut glass tea bottles with lids and a mixing bowl. Measuring 20 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, this item sits appropriately on a sideboard top in a dining room or living area today to display collectables or store small keepsakes.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, imported tea was a costly luxury commodity across Europe. Lockable containers known as tea caddies were created to secure the leaves, often serving as status symbols displayed prominently in formal reception rooms.

High-status examples were crafted from fine exotic hardwoods including rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood. Decorative accents frequently featured brass marquetry, mother-of-pearl inlay, tortoiseshell, and internal metal foil linings designed to protect contents from humidity.

Authentic Regency pieces typically display fine geometric or foliate brass inlay set into dense rosewood or mahogany. Look for period details such as hand-cut brass scrollwork, original lock mechanisms, cast brass or turned wood side handles, and turned bun feet.

A decorative caddy serves as a functional accents piece on a console table, desk, or sideboard. Modern designers frequently place them alongside modern lighting or contemporary glass art to create textural contrast.

Keep wooden antiques away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking and lifting inlay. Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the wood grain.
