FAQs

Wall mirrors featuring integrated planters or brackets gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly within French and Italian interior design, combining decorative reflection with functional display spaces for flora or small objects.

These pieces are typically constructed from carved softwood or gessoed wood, featuring hand-applied gilt leaf accents, painted surfaces, and traditionally silvered glass mirror plates set within contoured frames.

Authentic pieces often exhibit age-related characteristics such as foxing on the mirror glass, hand-carved joinery details, natural wear to the painted and gilded surfaces, and older backing boards or fixings.

This piece can be styled as a striking focal point in an entryway or living room, pairing the reflective glass with trailing foliage in the planter to balance classical ornamentation with organic texture.

Gilded surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners which can damage the delicate gold leaf and painted finish.
