This pair of nineteenth century William IV armchairs in rosewood functions practically as desk chairs within a traditional English country house setting. Each chair stands at 88 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. The dark brown timber frames exhibit carved cresting rails, scroll arms, turned front legs, and brass castors. The upright backs and arm pads display vertical stripes in shades of blue and cream, while the seats show visible wear and tear to the exposed hessian and padding. Placement suits a home study, library, or traditional office space where period seating provides both historical character and functional workspace accommodation. The combination of rich timber tones, striped textile panels, and metal hardware reflects established nineteenth century design conventions. Maintenance or reupholstery of the worn seat cushions allows the structural woodwork and upholstery details to integrate into everyday interior schemes.

Originating between 1830 and 1837, William IV seating bridges the Regency and Victorian eras, characterised by robust proportions, turned front legs, scroll arms, and carved cresting rails.

High-grade mahogany was predominantly used for the woodwork, combined with brass socket castors, jute webbing, coil springs, and natural horsehair padding for upholstery.

Key identification features include turned and fluted front legs fitted with brass castors, deeply carved top rails, curved arm supports, and splayed back legs.

Position a pair alongside a modern sofa or as carvers at a dining table, updating the seat upholstery with contemporary linen or velvet to contrast with the dark wood frame.

Dust the timber frames regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, apply natural beeswax polish annually, and position away from direct heat sources to prevent wood shrinkage.
