Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A set of six Victorian dining chairs crafted from warm brown mahogany. Each piece displays a balloon back silhouette incorporating a carved crossbar adorned with rosette detailing, paired with overstuffed seats upholstered in black fabric showing visible wear and cracking. The framing timbers exhibit very old and slight traces of ancient woodworm, while the structure remains solid with firm seats and no loose joints. The front supports consist of turned legs terminating in simple feet, and the styling complements an English Country House aesthetic. These dining chairs are suited for placement around a dining table in a traditional dining room or kitchen space. Measuring 48 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 90 cm in height with a seat height of 46 cm, they offer practical seating for daily meals or formal gatherings. The dark upholstery requires recovering to restore the finish, while the timber frames retain their original character and period details.

FAQs

Balloon back chairs are a quintessential mid-19th century design characterized by a rounded, open backframe that mimics the curved silhouette of a hot air balloon. Popularized during the Victorian era, these frames typically feature carved crossbars and softly contoured uprights.

Victorian dining chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, prized for their strength and deep colour. Upholstery traditionally incorporated horsehair padding covered in leather, velvet, or woven fabrics.

Authentic period chairs feature hand-carved decorative motifs, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and turned or fluted legs. Original pieces often display subtle variations in carving details and natural timber patination developed over decades.

Integrate period dining chairs into a modern home by positioning them around a minimalistic timber or stone dining table to create visual contrast. Updating worn upholstery with contemporary textured fabrics can also bridge historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Maintain antique mahogany frames by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying natural beeswax polish along the wood grain once or twice a year. Keep timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to avoid drying out the joinery and fading the finish.
