Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These 1880 wall mirrors are designed in the Florentine style and manufactured from giltwood and glass with a warm, aged gold finish. Each tall, openwork frame features deep Rococo Revival carving, including scrolling acanthus leaves, curling foliage, floral sprays, a basket of blooms crowning the top, and a sculpted female mask beneath the flower basket. Graceful female figures flank the oval mirror plates and support the sweeping upper scrolls, while the frames descend to dramatic pierced cartouches with shell and foliate motifs. Additional visible details include elaborate openwork framing, sculpted winged caryatid figures, and rich textural depth across the carved surfaces. Dimensions are 142 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 15 cm deep per mirror. In a contemporary home, this pair functions effectively above a sideboard in a dining room or living space, hung on a wall to reflect light and add architectural interest. The matching mirrors create a balanced display, suitable for enhancing a room with traditional or classic decorative schemes.

FAQs

Originating in Renaissance Florence and widely revived during the 19th century, Florentine mirrors feature intricate hand-carved wood frames adorned with scrolling acanthus leaves, caryatids, and gold leaf finishes.

These frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso clay, and finished with water gilding using real gold leaf over a red bole preparation.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved details with minor asymmetry, natural surface wear revealing the underlying red bole clay, and original silvered mirror glass.

Placing a matching pair symmetrically on either side of a hallway doorway or above a sideboard creates balance, while contrasting the ornate gilded carving against neutral wall surfaces.

Giltwood surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft, dry artists brush or feather duster; liquids, damp cloths, and commercial polish must be avoided as they dissolve gesso and gold leaf.
