Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Wheel-cut floral engraving on the border panels: traditional hand decoration.
Glass rosettes securing each mirrored slip: early twentieth-century Italian assembly.
Light oxidisation and grey spotting in the silvering: natural ageing of reflective backing.
Bevelled edges around the octagon plate: individually shaped and polished glass.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian Venetian wall mirror is an early 20th century piece made from silver mirrored glass and wood, presented in an Italian Venetian style. The octagonal design incorporates bevelled edge panels surrounded by hand-etched floral glass borders with delicate foliage motifs, complemented by a decorative scroll crest at the top and a smaller matching lower crest. Small areas of patination are visible across the reflective surfaces, showing age while maintaining intact glass without breaks or losses. The photograph shows a reflective silver finish, clear etched white floral details, and distinct multi-panel construction with shaped glass segments. Practical placement includes hanging above a sideboard or console table in a hallway, living room or bedroom as a decorative wall accent.

FAQs

Originating in Venice and Murano, Venetian mirrors are characterized by mirrored glass frames surrounding a central plate, often embellished with hand-etched floral motifs, bevelled edges, and decorative glass crests.

Traditional Venetian mirrors feature silvered glass plates mounted onto solid wood backings, accented with cut, etched, or blown glass components fastened by brass screws or glass rosettes.

Authentic pieces feature reverse-etched detailing executed by hand, traditional wooden backboards, minor oxidisation spots on the silvering, and individual glass frame segments secured with small hardware fittings.

Position the mirror opposite natural light sources or windows to maximize illumination, pairing the intricate glasswork with minimal modern consoles or painted walls to create contrast.

Clean glass surfaces using a dry or slightly dampened lint-free microfibre cloth, taking care not to allow liquid cleaners to pool inside etched grooves or penetrate the silver backing.
