Produced during the reign of King George III in the mid-to-late 18th century, these mirrors are characterised by asymmetrical scrollwork, naturalistic foliage, and crestings depicting mythical birds like phoenixes or ho-ho birds, influenced by French Rococo design.

The frames were hand-carved primarily from softwoods such as pine or lime wood, sealed with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf. The glass plates were typically mercury-gilded, silvered flat glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-carving under the gesso layer, subtle wear or natural oxidisation to the gold leaf finish, dark foxing spots on mercury glass plates, and original hand-cut wooden backboards secured with wrought iron nails.

A pair of decorative gilt mirrors is commonly hung symmetrically above a sideboard, flanking a central fireplace, or placed along a hallway to reflect natural light and introduce texture against contemporary backdrop tones.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster without applying pressure. Avoid liquid cleaners, polish, or damp cloths on gilt areas, as water dissolves gesso and damages fragile gold leaf.
