Art-deco, Westminster Wall Clock

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A very fine looking and attractive Art-Deco wall clock, striking the Westminster_Chime.

The walnut case is nicely polished and contrasts beautifully with the silvered dial, glazed and mirrored window to the bottom of the fully opening door, and the chromed opening handle.

The silvered, rectangular dial has black Arabic numerals, an inner minute track, and superbly cut hands. It is clearly signed "Veritable Westminster. C.V. Bexancon."

The 8 day movement strikes the Westminster Chime on the quarters and the hours. It strikes on rods with a very crisp, clean, tuneful tone. It is fitted with a STRIKE/SILENT control.

The movement has just been fully serviced by our BHI registered horologist and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee.

A lovely clock of compact proportions.

This 1930 Art Deco wall clock comes in a warm brown walnut case with polished surfaces, carved stylized foliage at the top corners, and a chromed opening handle on the side. The dial has a silvered rectangular face with an octagonal shape, black Arabic numerals, an inner minute track, and cut hands, while the lower portion of the fully opening door contains a glazed and mirrored window displaying an internal metal pendulum. Additional visible details include wind holes on the dial face and decorative carved leaf motifs on the upper wooden crest. Measuring 56 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, the compact timepiece suits a narrow wall space in a living room, hallway, or study today.

FAQs

Art Deco horology emerged during the 1920s and 1930s, featuring streamlined geometric silhouettes, stylized motifs, and distinct typography on the dial face.

Clocks from this period were crafted using hardwood casings, polished timber veneers such as walnut or oak, bevelled glass panels, and mechanical brass movements.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate Arabic numerals, geometric aperture shapes, hand-wound mechanical movements with key windholes, and period maker signatures on the dial.

Position the clock on a prominent feature wall above a console, within a hallway, or alongside contemporary art to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern interior design.

Mount the clock level to ensure proper pendulum oscillation, wind the mechanism regularly using the correct key size, keep away from damp environments, and dust the wooden case gently with a dry microfiber cloth.
