Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This original wall clock from the 1930s Mid-Century Modern period displays a circular Bakelite casing finished in dark brown, complemented by a glass cover, metal hardware, and black hands. The off-white painted dial bears the name Smiths Sectric alongside black Arabic numerals, with distinctive aged spots and staining visible across the face and a maker inscription at the bottom reading "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN". The electric movement has been replaced with a quartz battery movement housed inside the 37 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 8 cm deep case. Suitable for domestic interiors today, the timepiece fits neatly onto narrow wall spaces within industrial loft or vintage kitchen settings. It provides reliable timekeeping through its modern battery operation while retaining its original mid-century character and dark casing. The piece hangs securely on interior surfaces to serve both a practical and decorative function in everyday living spaces.

FAQs

Bakelite wall clocks are timepieces encased in early synthetic thermosetting plastic, widely manufactured in Great Britain during the mid-20th century by companies such as Smiths.

These timepieces feature a molded phenol-formaldehyde resin casing combined with a printed metal dial face, a glass protective lens, and an internal mechanical or synchronous electric movement.

Authentic examples display characteristic seam lines from moulding, a dense feel relative to modern plastics, a distinct dark brown or black colouration, and often dial markings indicating origin such as Made in Great Britain.

Position the clock as a focal accent on a neutral wall, pairing its dark Bakelite frame with natural timber, exposed brick, or minimalist metal furnishings.

Wipe the casing gently using a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh solvents that can strip the finish, and have any internal electrical mechanisms inspected by a professional prior to use.
