Regency Pad Top Bracket/table Clock

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present for your consideration a fine example of a high quality George III mahogany single pad top antique bracket/table clock. The photo is of the unrestored clock - the dial, case and movement will be in showroom condition with the clock available early December and more photos will be added then.

Standing almost 16 inches tall, this increasingly rare example is in superb condition. The mahogany case has inset brass to the chamfered corners, a fully locking front door/panel and it stands on ogee brass bracket feet. It has relined sound fishscale frets to the sides and door, a glass rear door to highlight the excellent quality movement and retains its original brass carrying handle to the pad top.

The recently overhauled and cleaned eight day duration five pillar fusee rack-striking movement has an anchor recoil escapement and as such benefits from my three year guarantee. The full hours are struck on a beautiful sounding bell. The back plate is plain, of its time, and signed 'Ward, London'.

The fully restored convex dial, accompanied by original brass hands, and again with the maker's name notated to the dial finishes the classic Regency appearance.

Robert Ward (active 1779-1808) of Abchurch Lane, London is listed as being apprenticed in 1768 and making clocks between 1779 and 1808. He was regarded as a particularly fine maker of musical movements. Because clocks of this specific styling peaked right around 1805-1810, this piece represents the pinnacle of his late-career output as he modernized his workshop's style to keep up with the fierce competition of the London market. Identical Regency bracket clocks signed simply "Ward, Londoni feature this exact combination of a stepped/pad top, plain shouldered plates, fish scales, and a convex dial.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

This Regency pad top bracket or table clock is made from mahogany with brass hardware and glass. The warm brown timber case exhibits a smooth polished finish with visible grain patterns. The object displays a pad top surmounted by an arched brass carrying handle, chamfered front corners inset with narrow brass mouldings, and an arched glazed dial door fitted with a small keyhole escutcheon. Below the circular convex white dial bearing black Roman numerals and the maker's signature Ward London, two symmetrical green fishscale pierced brass frets adorn the lower front panel. Additional matching green fishscale brass frets are set into the sides of the case. The structure is raised upon four cast ogee brass bracket feet. Measuring 39 cm high, the clock fits neatly on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or study desk to provide a traditional timekeeping function in a living room, hallway, or office setting.

Originating in the early 19th century during the British Regency period, a bracket clock is a portable spring-driven timepiece encased in timber, originally designed to stand on a matching wall bracket or mantelpiece.

These timepieces were constructed using solid mahogany or rich flame veneers, embellished with cast brass handles, brass bracket feet, glass apertures, and silk-backed brass frets.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut mechanical movements, original fusee mechanisms, period maker signatures on the dial, and consistent historical wear on the timber casing.

Place the timepiece centrally on a minimalist fireplace mantelpiece or dark timber console table to serve as a focal historical accent.

Position the case away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, dusting the timber regularly with a dry cloth and applying natural beeswax sparingly.
