Description

An excellent example of London Clockmaking from the early 19th century.

This particular example is unsigned which is rather unusual for this period. The 8 day duration movement is of the highest London quality, with the striking carried out on a bell on the hour. The pendulum also features an engraved measurement for regulation and can be fixed into position for transport.

The painted dial has Roman numerals and matching blued steel hands.

There are some very nice features to the case with brass fish scale frets to the side, a brass carrying handle to the top which is mounted on a brass bordered pad. To the front elevation there are further brass frets below the dialwhich are exquisitely engraved. The case stands on four brass bracket feet.

An excellent example.

Note: Both the case and dial have recently been sympathetically restored. The movement is currently in working order but it will be fully overhauled and serviced before delivery.

Originating in late 18th and early 19th-century Britain, a Regency bracket clock is a portable table timepiece typically housed in a wooden case with a carrying handle, designed originally to rest on a matching wall bracket or mantelpiece.

These clocks typically feature flame mahogany, rosewood, or oak veneers over softwood framing, complemented by cast brass mounts, fretted brass sound vents, glass convex covers, and steel clock hands.

Authentic Regency bracket clocks generally feature arched or dome-topped cases, circular dials with Roman numerals, side sound frets backed by silk, cast brass bracket feet, and brass carrying handles.

A bracket clock functions well as a focal accent on a living room mantelpiece, atop a dark wood sideboard, or integrated into a library bookshelf setup to introduce classical historic proportion.

Keep the timber case away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer warping. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain once or twice a year.
