A beautiful set of 4 mahogany Hepplewhite dining chairs circa 1800. With nicely carved and decorated shield backs and spade feet. All joints are solid and the seats are in excellent condition having been re-covered.

The style is recognised by light proportions, shield-shaped, oval, or heart-shaped backs, and central pierced splats featuring motifs such as wheat sheaves, urns, or prince of Wales feathers.

Traditional late 18th-century Hepplewhite seating was constructed primarily from solid mahogany or satinwood. Framework joinery utilized mortise and tenon joints, complemented by woven cane, horsehair, or fabric upholstered drop-in and fixed seats.

Authentic period chairs feature hand-carved details, uneven hand-planed surfaces on the seat rails, and traditional joinery. The legs are typically square and tapered, sometimes ending in spade feet, with visible oxidation and natural aging along the underside of the frame.
