Pair of Antique Victorian Walnut Occasional Chairs C.1860

19th century
Description

A pair of mid 19th century walnut occasional chairs, the spoon-back frames with integral dished finger-grips to the reverse and enclosing an upholstered cartouche backrest trimmed in woven braid, set over serpentine-fronted stuff-over seats and raised on baluster and ring-turned forelegs and swept sabre supports to the rear.

Fully upholstered backs allow the pair to stand cleanly away from walls, while the dished hand-grips were specifically conceived to draw them forward from a desk or dressing table without marking the fabric. Their slender, armless footprint makes them an ideal practical pairing flanking a hall console or positioned as occasional bedroom seating.

Very good antique condition, with light surface marks consistent with age, alongside clean, well-tailored upholstery. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1860.

Price is for pair.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Victorian occasional chairs from around 1860 is constructed from warm brown walnut with a polished finish and stands 90.5 cm high, 49 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. Each spoon-back frame features an integral dished finger-grip on the reverse, a cartouche-shaped backrest enclosed by the timber, and a serpentine-fronted stuff-over seat. The upholstery is a yellow fabric with a small-scale geometric pattern, complemented by woven braid trim around the backrest edges. Baluster and ring-turned forelegs and swept sabre rear supports complete the design, alongside light surface marks consistent with age on the wood. Fully upholstered backs enable the pair to stand cleanly away from walls, while the dished hand-grips assist in drawing them forward from a desk or dressing table. Their slender, armless footprint makes them an ideal practical pairing to flank a hall console or serve as occasional seating in a bedroom. The upholstery is clean and well-tailored, and the chairs are structurally sound in very good antique condition.

FAQs

Victorian occasional chairs from the mid-19th century feature curved backrests, often in balloon or spoon shapes, alongside decorative turned front legs and rich timber frames such as walnut or rosewood.

These chairs were typically constructed from solid hardwoods like walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, combined with webbed seating foundations, horsehair padding, and decorative woven upholstery fabrics.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-carved joinery, original wood patination, hand-turned front legs, and natural wood grain variation along structural joints.

A pair of Victorian side chairs can be positioned in a hallway alcove, flanking a console table, or placed alongside a bedroom dressing table to add historical texture and timber warmth.

Regularly dust the timber frame with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax twice a year along the grain, while keeping upholstery away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading.
