This Victorian oak cigar box, dating from around 1890, takes the form of a Great Western Railway coal wagon. The warm brown timber body displays visible grain, reinforced planking mouldings, diagonal wooden braces fastened with metal studs, and hand-painted yellow lettering reading "G W R" alongside numerical markings. Metal components include spoked brass wheels, side buffers, and a small loop handle on the hinged lid. The piece measures 18 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Positioned on a study desk or office library shelf, this accessory serves as a functional container for cigars. The hinged top opens to access the fitted interior, while the wheels and wagon architecture provide decorative character suited to a gentleman's library or themed workspace display.

Victorian novelty cigar boxes are decorative desktop containers designed during the late nineteenth century to store cigars, frequently shaped like everyday objects, industrial machinery, or transport vehicles.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, often incorporating metal liners, brass hardware, and painted lettering.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related patination, period-correct joinery methods, original metal fittings, and occasional stamped registration numbers or maker marks.

Place the box on a wooden desk, bookshelf, or sideboard as a decorative accent alongside books, brass objects, or framed artwork.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, avoiding chemical cleaners or exposure to direct heat sources.
