FAQs

Rococo overmantel mirrors originated in 18th-century France, characterised by asymmetrical curves, acanthus leaf motifs, shell crests, and gilded frames designed to sit directly above a chimney breast or mantelpiece.

Antique gilt mirrors typically feature a hand-carved softwood frame coated in gesso plaster, covered in gold leaf gilding, and fitted with silvered or mercury glass paneling.

Authentic period pieces feature carved wooden backings, natural foxing on the glass plate, visible seam lines in the hand-applied gold leaf, and subtle wear revealing the red clay bole underlayer.

Position the mirror central above a formal fireplace mantelpiece or mount it over a hallway console table to reflect natural light and create a dramatic architectural focal point.

Dust the gilded frame softly with a dry feather duster or soft brush, avoiding water, liquid polishes, or chemical solvents that dissolve water gilding and delicate gesso details.
