This French Empire mantel clock from 1860 is an ornamental timepiece combining gilt bronze, patinated bronze, and an enamel dial. The gold and dark bronze object rests on four small rounded feet, with a rectangular base decorated by a relief panel of figures, acanthus leaf mouldings, and beaded borders. A dark patinated bronze cherub holding a book sits to the left of the circular white enamel dial, which features Roman numerals. The clock is surmounted by an urn finial, while a small globe and stacked books sit to the right of the dial. The mechanism is marked by Japy Freres on the back plate, and Causard Paris on the dial. Measuring 33 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 18.5 cm deep, this mantel clock makes an appropriate decorative accessory for display on a mantelpiece, a side table, or a library shelf in a traditional home. Its balanced composition of figural sculpture, relief work, and classical motifs suits formal living spaces or studies. The cleaned movement retains its functional capability for keeping time while serving as a sculptural element within interior settings.

19th-century French mantel clocks typically feature ornamental casting in gilt bronze (ormolu), often depicting classical figures, allegorical motifs, or architectural elements paired with mechanical movements.

These timepieces were built using cast bronze finished with fire gilding or electroplating, often combined with patinated bronze figures, white enamel dial plates, and eight-day pendulum movements.

Authentic movements by Japy Freres are typically stamped with the makers trademark circular seal on the movement backplate, alongside serial numbers and mechanical pendulum assembly marks.

A gilt bronze mantel clock creates a focal point when placed on a marble mantelpiece, a formal sideboard top, or integrated into a dark wood bookshelf arrangement.

Dust gilt bronze gently using a soft, dry microfibre brush, avoiding liquid polishes or abrasive chemical cleaners that can strip the delicate gilding layer.
