Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

A nineteenth-century French ormolu mantel clock is characterised by its cast-bronze casing finished with gold gilding, often integrated with hand-painted porcelain panels or enamel dials. These timepieces were designed as decorative centrepieces for fireplaces and salons during the Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Napoleon III periods.

These clocks typically combine cast bronze finished with ormolu gilding, hand-painted porcelain panels resembling Sevres designs, and white enamel dials featuring Roman numerals. Internal mechanical movements were crafted from heavy brass with steel pinions.

Authentic French clocks often feature maker stamps or serial numbers on the brass movement backplate, hand-carved chasing on the gilt bronze, and hand-painted detailing on porcelain elements rather than printed transfers. The weight of heavy cast bronze rather than lighter spelter or zinc alloy is another indicator.

Position the clock centrally on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or formal entryway console table to act as a visual focal point. Contrast the gilded ornamentation against matte neutral walls or dark tones like navy or forest green.

Dust the exterior gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or abrasive cleaners which can strip original gilt layers. Consult a professional horologist for internal movement servicing and oiling every three to five years.
