This Victorian Gothic Revival overmantle mirror dates to 1880. The rectangular wooden frame has a black ebonised finish with a contrasting gold gilt slip around the glass and an overhanging top cornice moulding. Triangular upper corners contain carved and gilded foliage spandrels above a pointed Gothic arch frame enclosing the original bevelled glass mirror plate. Original metal hanging rings are mounted to the left and right exterior frame edges, and a wood panelled back encloses the reverse. Measuring 97 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 6 cm deep, the mirror sits directly above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or bedroom to reflect natural light and create a focal point.

Popularised during the nineteenth century, these mirrors were designed to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring dark ebonised timber finishes combined with gilded detailing influenced by Gothic Revival and Aesthetic Movement styles.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved timber frames, finished with black ebonised stain or lacquer, embellished with gold leaf gilding over a gesso base, and fitted with bevelled mirror glass plates.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display natural age-related oxidisation or foxing to the original mirror glass, hand-carved spandrel details, and genuine gold leaf gilding rather than modern gold paint finishes.

Position the mirror above a period or contemporary fireplace mantelpiece to establish an architectural focal point, pairing the black and gold frame with neutral or dark dramatic paint palettes.

Dust the ebonised wood and delicate gilded surfaces lightly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners, polishes, or damp materials near the gold leaf.
