This pair of nineteenth-century George II style side chairs in the manner of Giles Grendey is manufactured from warm brown walnut with an upholstered gold velvet seat. Each chair presents a pierced open back shaped in a shell form and detailed with acanthus leaves and harebells, above scroll-carved cabriole legs terminating in hairy paw feet. The stuff-over seat on the left-hand front corner of one chair displays a tear revealing the underlying horsehair. These bold English country house dining chairs measure 99 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, and function practically around a dining table or as accent seating in a living room.

George II furniture from the early to mid-18th century is characterised by the use of dense walnut or mahogany, detailed relief carvings such as shell motifs, and cabriole legs ending in pad, paw, or ball-and-claw feet.

Georgian chairs were traditionally framed using solid walnut or mahogany with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, featuring hand-carved back splats and drop-in or padded seats supported by woven webbing.

Authentic period chairs display hand-saw marks on the frame interior, natural timber oxidisation, irregular hand-carved details, and pegged joinery rather than modern machine fasteners or uniform dowels.

These chairs can be placed as standalone accent pieces in an entryway, alongside a modern writing desk, or paired together in a contemporary dining room to create contrast.

Keep the timber frames away from direct heat sources and apply natural beeswax periodically, while gently brushing or vacuuming velvet upholstery using a low-suction soft brush attachment.
