Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Quarter-sawn oak crest rail: medullary ray flecks across the timber face.
Wooden dowels securing the arm pads: traditional joinery method.
Darkened accumulation around spindle sockets: natural settlement of dirt and wax over decades.
Even softening on the front seat edge: handling wear from regular sitting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A primitive stick back armchair is a regional form of vernacular seating, traditionally crafted by local turners or bodgers using native hardwoods. Originating in rural Britain and Ireland during the 18th and 19th centuries, these chairs feature socketed spindle backs and splayed legs fixed directly into a solid wooden seat board.

These chairs were historically constructed using unseasoned native timber such as ash, oak, elm, or fruitwood. The component spindles and legs were shaped using drawknives and pole lathes, then fitted into bored holes in a thick carved seat using wedged tenon joints.

Authentic examples display hand-planed surfaces, asymmetric tool marks, and organic wear patterns around the armrests and footrests. Look for natural timber shrinkage resulting in slightly oval-shaped socket holes and original wedged joinery beneath the seat.

Place the chair as an accent piece alongside contemporary upholstered sofas to introduce texture and historical contrast. Pairing it with neutral textiles, clean-lined side tables, or minimalist backdrop architecture highlights its sculptural silhouette.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity variations to prevent cracking or joint loosening. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the finish.
