We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rococo style wall mirrors are defined by asymmetrical curves, elaborate C-scrolls, shell designs, floral motifs, and detailed foliage carving. Popularised in 18th-century France and revived in the 19th century, these mirrors were engineered to maximise natural light in formal reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were constructed using hand-carved softwoods or hardwoods coated with layers of gesso and red bole clay. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished with agate stones to achieve a lustrous finish.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit genuine wear to the gilding, revealing the underlying reddish clay bole or white gesso layers. Furthermore, original mirror plates typically display minor foxing or oxidisation, while the rear features hand-cut timber backing boards and traditional joinery marks.

A Rococo gilt mirror serves as a contrasting focal point when paired with clean modern lines or contemporary paint schemes. Mounting the piece above a minimalist console table, a fireplace mantel, or within a hallway allows the ornate carving to draw the eye without overwhelming the room.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft feather duster or dry artist paintbrush to avoid flaking delicate gold leaf. Water and chemical cleaning products must never be applied directly to the gilded frame, while glass cleaner should only be applied via a damp cloth directly to the mirror plate.
