During the late nineteenth century, workshops in Damascus and Cairo produced intricate furniture for local residences and export to Europe, blending traditional Islamic geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy with classic forms such as the curule or Savonarola frame.

These chairs were typically constructed from local hardwoods such as walnut or fruitwood, carved with low-relief decoration, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl shell arranged in complex geometric and micro-mosaic patterns.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut mother-of-pearl inlays secured into hand-chiselled recesses, carved Arabic script or geometric panels, and signs of age-appropriate hand-tool marks and natural timber shrinkage.

These sculptural seats serve as functional accent pieces in contemporary living spaces, entryways, or libraries, complementing neutral decor schemes by providing rich texture, dark timber tones, and detailed geometric contrast.

Keep the furniture in a stable environment with consistent humidity to prevent timber movement that can loosen shell inlays. Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoid chemical cleansers or excess moisture.
