17th Century Laburnum Oyster Veneered Lace Box, William & Mary Period

17th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Late 17th Century William & Mary Period Laburnum Oyster Veneered Lace Box, With Very Attractive Geometrically Strung Decoration To Hinged Lid, Enclosing Recently Relined Red Velvet Interior.

The wonderfully figured laburnum oyster veneers are particularly attractive, complemented by the intricate concentric circular stringing to the lid and the bold moulded edges. The box retains a lovely rich colour and surface throughout, with the usual old marks, scuffs and minor imperfections associated with age and use, all blending in nicely. It also retains a working lock and key.

Originally intended for the storage of valuable lace and other delicate textiles, these boxes were both practical and decorative household objects during the late 17th century.

It has been attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, receiving an appropriate natural wax polish, and is now ready to place in the home.

This shallow rectangular lace box belongs to the William and Mary period of the late seventeenth century, specifically circa 1690. Constructed from laburnum wood with boxwood and brass, the exterior displays warm brown oyster veneering and concentric circular stringing across the hinged lid, complemented by a shaped brass keyhole escutcheon on the front panel and bold moulded edges. The dimensions measure 11.5 cm high by 43 cm wide and 33 cm deep. Originally designed for storing delicate textiles, this piece suits placement on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study today. The surface holds a natural wax polish over the historic timber, while old marks, scuffs and minor imperfections remain visible from age and use alongside the recently relined red velvet interior.

Originating during the late 17th century in England, a lace box was a specialised shallow wooden container designed to store lace flat and protect it from creasing.

These boxes were constructed with solid timber carcasses overlaid with thin cross-sections of branch wood, known as oysters, creating circular grain patterns frequently framed by boxwood stringing.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, thick natural timber veneers exhibiting age-related shrinkage, original iron or brass lock plates with period patina, and hand-planed timber surfaces.

A veneered box can be displayed on a sideboard, desk, or bookshelf to introduce historical texture, serving as a functional storage container for small desktop accessories.

Maintain veneered timber by keeping it in a stable indoor climate with consistent humidity, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and applying clear beeswax polish annually.
