Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This mirror sits above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or bedroom within classical and contemporary interiors.

FAQs

Rococo style, originating in 18th-century France, is characterised by asymmetrical compositions, naturalistic motifs, elaborate C-scrolls, and flowing foliage. Mirrors from this movement feature carved organic detailing and gilded finishes designed to reflect light across grand reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood mirror frames were carved from softwoods or hardwoods, coated with multiple layers of gesso plaster, and finished with a clay bole base. Gold leaf was then applied using water or oil gilding techniques before being burnished with agate stone.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-carved wooden backing boards, hand-cut glass with subtle mercury distortions, and natural wear along the gesso layer. The gilding often shows honest oxidisation, rubbing at high points, and exposed red or grey clay bole beneath worn gold areas.

An overmantel mirror functions as a central focal point when mounted above a fireplace, console table, or living room sideboard. Positioning the mirror opposite windows maximises light distribution while providing a structural anchor to contemporary furnishings.

Giltwood surfaces require gentle dusting with a soft brush or microfibre cloth to prevent flaking. Liquid cleaners and chemical polishes must be avoided, as moisture dissolves underlying gesso and damages delicate gold leaf.
