This Chinese export silver hand mirror dates from 1880 in the style of the period. The piece comprises a silver frame holding an oval mirror plate, a bevelled edge, a maker's mark, and a handle shaped like twisted bamboo. The silver finish has a reflective sheen, complemented by intricate relief decoration of a pair of dragons chasing a flaming pearl, alongside bamboo leaf designs and engraved monograms. The construction incorporates detailed metalwork with a heavy feel. Measuring 12 cm in width, 27 cm in height, and 1.5 cm in depth with a weight of 438 g, the mirror functions practically for personal grooming and decoration. Placed today on a bedside table, dressing table, or vanity surface, the object brings traditional craftsmanship to daily routines. The condition presents as excellent antique state with light signs of wear consistent with age, maintaining original integrity.

Chinese Export Silver refers to silver items crafted in China between the late 18th and mid-20th centuries primarily for Western trade, combining traditional Chinese decorative motifs with Western functional forms.

These pieces were typically constructed with hand-chased and repousse worked silver frames, often featuring intricate borders encasing a flat or bevelled glass mirror plate.

Authentic items frequently feature silversmith workshop stamps in Chinese characters, occasionally accompanied by artisan marks or Latin character initials corresponding to recognised Shanghai, Canton, or Hong Kong makers.

A decorative silver hand mirror can be laid flat on a mirrored dressing table tray, mounted in a shadow box, or displayed on a easel stand within a curio cabinet.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and use a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth on tarnish, ensuring liquids do not seep into the mirror glass housing.
