This pair of nineteenth century side chairs comes from Lincolnshire, England, taking the form of rustic farmhouse ladder back seating constructed from English ash. The timber displays a deep golden warm brown colour with a smooth finish, complemented by finely woven rush seats. Each chair incorporates four shaped ladder back rungs, unusual angular cabriole front legs, and turned front stretchers fitted between the lower frame components. Total dimensions measure 95 cm high by 48 cm wide and 42 cm deep, with minor historic woodworm evident across the original woodwork. Such traditional country chairs function well in a dining room, kitchen, or hallway setting to provide practical extra seating around a rustic table or as standalone decorative accents.

A ladder back chair features horizontal wooden rungs stacked vertically across the backrest, resembling the steps of a ladder, a traditional design popular in European country furniture.

Regional hardwoods such as ash, oak, or elm were commonly crafted into the structural frames, often paired with woven rush, cane, or solid timber seats.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-turned stretchers, subtle variations from hand-carved components, pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and natural wear on the lower rungs and seat edges.

These chairs pair effectively with scrubbed wooden dining tables in country kitchens or serve as accent seating alongside clean-lined contemporary furniture to introduce organic texture.

Dust the timber frame with a soft dry cloth and apply natural wax polish occasionally, while keeping woven rush seats free from excessive moisture and direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
