This George III walnut and carved giltwood mirror dates from circa 1750 and follows the George II style. The piece has a figured brown walnut veneer frame with gold leaf gilding on the carved details. The swan neck pediment is centred by a flower petal cartouche surrounded by scrolling leaves, with matching paterae at the terminals above deep rising leaf mouldings. The inner edges have egg and dart borders flanked by falling oak leaves, acorns, and flowers, alongside scrolled hanging brackets. The well-figured walnut facings sit before leaf-decorated slips that hold the bevelled glass plate, complemented by a shaped apron below. Measuring 138 cm high by 74 cm wide with a 9 cm depth, the mirror is well-suited for placement above a mantelpiece in an English country house setting to bring period character and reflective light into a principal reception room.

George II era mirrors typically combine highly figured walnut veneers with elaborate, hand-carved giltwood accents. They often feature architecturally shaped outlines, scrollwork, carved crestings such as cartouches or shells, and bevelled glass plates.

Frames from this period were predominantly constructed from a softwood or oak substrate veneered in figured walnut or mahogany. Carved decorative elements were executed in limewood or pine, coated in gesso, and finished using traditional water gilding techniques.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit signs of age such as hand-cut backboards, natural oxidisation or mercury foxing on the glass plate, and slight shrinkage lines in the veneer. The gilding typically displays subtle wear exposing the underlying red or grey clay bole.

Positioning a period mirror above a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or console table creates a focal point that bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary decor. The warm wood tones and gold leaf surface contrast effectively against muted or dark paint finishes.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners on the gilded areas to prevent stripping the gold leaf. The timber veneer can be treated occasionally with a neutral beeswax polish, taking care not to touch the gesso or mirror glass.
