This pair of Victorian Greek Revival armchairs follows a style possibly designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. The frames are constructed from dense mahogany finished in a warm brown colour, paired with thick brown leather upholstery across the seats and backrests. Each chair includes turned front legs supported by castors, complemented by padded armrests and a flared crest rail. Geometric incised detailing and a carved Greek key band appear on the woodwork. The armchair measures 92 cm high by 71 cm wide by 75 cm deep with a seat height of 45 cm, and the tub chair measures 88.5 cm high by 58 cm wide by 63 cm deep with a seat height of 40 cm. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or study, these pieces provide comfortable seating for reading and writing desks. The robust frames stand ready for everyday use while adding classical architectural presence to an interior. They suit traditional or eclectic home offices, parlours, or living spaces as statement reading chairs.

Greek Revival furniture emerged in the nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Characterised by bold geometric lines, classical motifs like the Greek key or fretwork, and architectural proportions, pieces from this movement emphasize symmetry, structural integrity, and rich timber framing.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense, high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood for structural frames. Seats were traditionally upholstered in leather or woven horsehair over coil springs and natural stuffing, complemented by cast brass or ceramic castors attached to turned or swept timber legs.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-carved or incised classical ornament, traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural patination on the timber. Look for period details such as stamped brass castors, hand-stitched leather work, and architectural crest rails with carved palmettes or geometric fretwork.

The strong architectural lines of Greek Revival armchairs allow them to function as sculptural anchor pieces in modern spaces. They integrate well alongside minimalist upholstery, contemporary art, and neutral colour schemes where their dark mahogany timber and leather textures create visual contrast.

Keep mahogany frames away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish bleaching; apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Preserve antique leather by applying a dedicated leather conditioner periodically to retain flexibility and prevent surface cracking.
