Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Engraved brass plate on the lid inscribed 1760: contemporary date.
Clamped breadboard ends on the lid: joined with pegs to control timber shrinkage.
Cast brass swan-neck handle on shaped rosettes: mid-eighteenth-century pattern.
Dense timber with dark oxidisation and old ink stains: long handling history.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This mid-18th-century document box dates from the Georgian period and follows a gentleman's library style. Constructed from mahogany, it presents a warm brown colour with a crossbanded lid border. The rectangular body features a brass swing handle centred on the top, an engraved brass nameplate on the lid, a brass keyhole escutcheon on the front face, and a key with an attached reddish-brown tassel hanging from the keyhole. Minor splits, knocks, and a slight rise to the lid demonstrate authentic age and wear. The piece measures 13 cm high, 43.5 cm wide, and 28 cm deep. In a modern interior, this practical box sits neatly on an office desk or study table to store papers, stationery, and small valuables. The solid, usable construction allows everyday access while keeping workspaces tidy. The brass hardware, visible key, and engraved dedication plate provide functional security alongside traditional desk accessory details.

FAQs

A Georgian document box is a portable wooden chest crafted during the 18th century, designed to secure valuable paper records, correspondence, and legal contracts.

These boxes were typically constructed from dense woods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass carrying handles, and internal steel or brass locking mechanisms.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut dovetail jointing, natural shrinkage across the grain, and original brass hardware showing age-appropriate oxidisation.

An antique document box can be positioned on an office desk, console table, or bookshelf to serve as a focal point and functional storage for modern stationery.

To preserve the timber, position the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources, wipe with a soft dry cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish occasionally.
