Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Iron wire staple hinges clenched through the timber: early joinery before butt hinges became general.
Incised cursive initials JP: typical eighteenth-century vernacular lettering.
Natural shrinkage splits along the timber grain: expected movement of solid oak over centuries.
Hand-punched rosettes and zigzag lines: traditional English country workshop decoration.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early 18th Century document box is constructed from dark brown oak in a rectangular shape with pegged timber joints. The overhanging hinged lid features a central carved diamond motif and a horizontal split across the top surface, while the front panel displays the carved initials 'JP' alongside geometric chip carving and dotted patterns. Signs of age include a split to the base and minor knocks throughout the timber. Measuring 12.5 cm high, 33 cm wide and 24.5 cm deep, this piece sits neatly on an office desk or library table to store papers, letters and small personal items in a traditional interior workspace.

Document boxes, often referred to as bible or deed boxes, were timber containers used in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to store written records, legal documents, and personal valuables.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from solid English oak and assembled using wooden dowels, iron staples, or iron pin hinges, frequently adorned with hand-carved initials or geometric motifs.

Authentic pieces show evidence of hand-planed oak surfaces, irregular hand-carved decoration, historic iron fittings, and genuine timber wear around high-touch areas such as lids and keyholes.

A carved oak box functions as a textured accent piece when displayed on a sideboard, home office desk, or bookshelf, bridging traditional timber craftsmanship with contemporary decor.

Keep the timber free from dust using a dry microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the oak and protect its original surface finish.
