This nineteenth-century overmantel mirror follows the Chinese Chippendale style and uses a giltwood frame surrounding a rectangular glass plate. The frame is finished in a bright gold colour and displays a high relief of intricately carved foliate, flowerheads, leaves, ruffles, and c-scrolls, complemented by a pierced, moulded, and fluted design. The top of the piece holds a detailed central crest composition flanked by trailing foliate and finials, while the shaped base incorporates further decorative scrolls and flowerhead motifs. The dimensions of the piece are 202.5 cm high, 176 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mirror fits well above a living room or dining room fireplace mantel, serving as a prominent wall hanging that reflects light and adds decorative architectural detail to the interior. The combination of intricate wood carving and the gilded surface provides a traditional British country house aesthetic suitable for formal spaces.

Chinese Chippendale style originated in 18th-century Britain through designers like Thomas Chippendale, blending Rococo scrollwork with East Asian architecture and motifs. Mirrors in this style typically feature asymmetrical C-scrolls, pagoda-shaped cresting, lattice fretwork, and naturalistic foliage carved into wood and finished with water or oil gilding.

19th-century giltwood mirrors were constructed using hand-carved softwoods, such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso and bole paste. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied and burnished, surrounding a hand-blown or early plate-glass mirror plate.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display evidence of hand-carving with subtle variations in depth and detail across the frame. Inspecting the back often reveals period timber backing boards, original iron fixing brackets, and historic signs of gilding wear or oxidisation where gold leaf has worn to expose the clay bole underneath.

A large giltwood overmantel mirror serves as an architectural anchor when positioned above a fireplace mantel piece or a low console table. Pairing the intricate carved frame against clean, contemporary paint tones creates a compelling juxtaposition between historical craftsmanship and minimalist modern design.

Antique water gilding is extremely delicate and sensitive to moisture, so liquids and chemical cleaners must be avoided on the frame. Light dusting with a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush removes surface dirt, while mirror glass should be cleaned carefully using a cloth dampened only with water to protect surrounding gilded areas.
