This Victorian wall mirror dates from 1860 in the English Country House style, formed of a carved wood and gesso structure finished in gold paint. The glass sits within a ribbed frame featuring an arched top decorated with a carved gesso crest and ornamental leaf embellishments at the bottom corners. Visible details include stepped plinth foot supports at the base and continuous fluted reeding along the outer vertical moulding. The piece measures 186 cm high, 134 cm wide at the top, and 6 cm deep. It functions as a substantial floor mirror or an overmantel mirror placed above a fireplace in a living room, hallway, or bedroom interior.

FAQs

Designed during the Victorian and 19th-century periods, overmantel mirrors typically feature an arched or shaped top with a flat base intended to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece. They frequently display gilded finishes, ribbed mouldings, and decorative carved gesso flourishes along the frame.

Traditional 19th-century mirror frames were constructed from carved wood coated with a plaster-like gesso layer before gold leaf or gilded paint was applied. The reflective glass was silvered, often resulting in subtle speckling or foxing over time.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit original wood backing boards, hand-cut joints, and slight foxing or oxidisation on the mirror glass. Look for natural wear on the gesso layer where the underlying red or dark clay base shows through the gilded surface.

A large gilt mirror can serve as a focal point when mounted above a chimney breast, positioned in a hallway, or leaned securely against a wall in a living area. The warm metallic tones pair well with contemporary neutral palettes or dark paint colours.

Clean the frame gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical sprays that can dissolve gesso or strip gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a soft cloth dampened with water, taking care not to let moisture seep into the edge of the frame.
