Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large Victorian wall mirror dates from 1880 and comes in the Victorian style. Constructed from giltwood, gesso and glass, the piece has a gold finish and features a rectangular plate surrounded by an ornate swept frame. The elaborate decoration includes acanthus leaf moulding, rococo scrollwork, corner cartouches and shell corner mouldings, with bevelled mirror glass held within an intricate border. It measures 91.5 cm high, 137.5 cm wide and 12 cm deep. In a modern interior, this versatile mirror works well mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece in a living room, or positioned as a statement wall piece in a hallway or bedroom. The orientation allows it to be hung either vertically or horizontally to suit the chosen wall space.

FAQs

A Victorian swept frame mirror features outwardly curving edges with elaborate rococo-inspired moulding, typically crafted using timber and gesso composition coated in gold leaf.

These mirrors were constructed with soft timber frames coated in plaster of Paris or gesso, detailed with moulded composition ornament, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces often show fine hairline cracking known as crazing across the gesso surface, reddish clay bole underneath worn gilding, and traditional timber backing boards.

Position the mirror above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or dining room sideboard to create a focal point that reflects light and adds architectural interest.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve water-gilding and damage delicate gesso decorations.
