Description

A beautiful and very well made antique William IV period mahogany and leather caned armchair. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840 period.

It is of very fine quality, the solid mahogany frame has beautifully carved scrolled armrests, it sits on carved baluster legs with brass casters. The proportions are lovely, and it is very comfortable as well.

We have had the frame re-polished, the cane is all in good order. The feather filled leather cushion has been newly made in a hand dyed brown leather. The condition is excellent for its age, with normal surface wear and patina to be expected on a period piece.

We also have another near identical chair coming through and currently being restored, if you are interested in a closely matched pair, let us know.

William IV furniture, produced in Britain during the 1830s, acts as a transitional period between Regency and early Victorian styles, characterised by heavy, robust proportions, classical influences, and often incorporating scrolled arms and turned legs.

These chairs were predominantly built using dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany, frequently featuring hand-woven cane panels for backrests and upholstered seat cushions covered in premium leather.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-correct joinery, dense timber patination, hand-turned front legs often fitted with original brass castors, and traditional cane work rather than modern machine-woven replacements.

Pairing this piece with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced contrast, allowing the rich wood tones and historic craftsmanship to serve as a focal point within a neutral room.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, while cleaning the leather with a damp cloth followed by a specialised leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
